The R-5 Summit School serves as a state approved Alternative Cooperative Education school which support students under an alternative learning model. For the R-5 High School student population, morning classes are conducted in the school, and the afternoons the students travel to a job, a pre-approved service learning experience, or a vocational/technical program. For the Summit K-8 school, individualized attention and small classroom sizes aim to set at-risk students up for success.
Located next to the District's Administration Building, the R-5 School includes eight classrooms, a lunch space, and a project space with commons, With a focus on interactive and group learning the limited number of classrooms created more space with commons area and project space which aligns with the future needs of teaching in the 21st century. Also integrated into the school is the D51 Board Meeting Room, used for various staff meetings and community events.
Interior spaces support group work and echo a professional environment as the high school students are bridging the gap between traditional school learning and the working world. An integrated child care center supports the needs of both staff and students. Exterior learning spaces include hands on greenhouses and common area equipment. Overall site improvements allowed for ample parking and easy traffic flow.
