Montrose County School District has retained Blythe Group + co teamed up with Wight & Company to complete conceptual design and schematic design for a possible replacement of the existing Montrose High School. The existing school was built originally in 1940 and has been added onto eight times in eight decades. The existing building poses many challenges, including aging infrastructure, safety and security, accessibility, and capacity.
The design process to date has involved going through a detailed inventory and programming effort to understand what the needs are for existing and future classes/programs. Then taking this information and organizing it into the form of the building.
The existing infrastructure has been considered, and we heard that the exiting Lloyd McMillan Gym still serves the community well. This portion of the existing school will remain. The remainder of the replacement school is proposed to be new construction built around this existing gym.
The proposed replacement school is proposed to have a majority of first floor only space with a portion of the building that is 3 stories high. The new design includes ample space for general education, as well as career to education spaces, athletics, administration, and other functions that are needed. The building design takes ques from the surrounding natural environment and provides access to the beautiful views that Montrose offers. A new stadium and athletic fields are also proposed as part of the design.
The replacement Montrose High school is intended to be funded by a Bond and that voters will decide on in early November 2024.
