In 2021, our firm conducted a space planning and building assessment for the City Staff of Montrose at their long-term location in a historic downtown building. The results of that space planning exercise inspired a relocation to a new building. The City purchased an old bank building that provided ample space for present and for future growth. Their new building is located in downtown Montrose and provides high visibility and ideal access for members of the public. The project was broken down in phases to support their budgeting strategies.

Phase 1 and 2 of this project steadily renovated the first and second floors, providing a secure and customer facing lobby, a large conference room, updated restrooms, and new offices on the second floor. This portion of the project was completed in the spring of 2023.

Phase 3 of this project extended to the exterior to provide a much needed facelift of the outdated 1980’s façade. The original parcel was developed in the 1880’s, but evidence of the 1940’s foundations, along with 2 or 3 additions were uncovered and improved upon before updating the cladding. A more classic civic look is given to the building by creating a formal entrance which pays homage to the old City Hall. Sandstone and brick are used to complement the patterns of downtown, and architectural metal cladding helps provides a subtle rhythm on the façade. Windows are added to bring in daylight to the building, improving the user experience. During construction, an older 1947 façade was uncovered and in surprisingly great shape – that façade was incorporated into the design, adding to the goal of breaking up the monotonous walls from the previous renovation.

Exterior improvements also provided ADA access on the sidewalks surrounding this downtown parcel. The old bank building had a classic time and temperature marquee corner sign that was a pseudo-landmark and often referenced by the community – not to worry, we’re bringing it back to life with a modern twist!
