Garfield County Public Library District was successful with a bond referendum in 2008 to renovate or replace all 6 of their brand libraries. Rifle and Parachute were chosen to be the first in the program and the District retained the Blythe Group to lead these two.
In Rifle, the 1980's building was demolished completely and replaced with a new one across the street adjacent to the City Hall. The street right-of-way was vacated to create a pedestrian plaza between the library and the new two-level, 100-space concrete parking structure that was also built as part of the project. There is a 53-KW photovoltaic system on the roof and the library is designed to connect to a future new City Hall. The project was awarded LEED Gold in October 2011.
In Parachute, the design was to renovate and expand the current facility. After a complete gutting, the foundation and slab were both extended and the roof was raised to surround what little was left of the original building. The project added a drive-up book return and community room and greatly expanded both the adult and children's areas as well as the restrooms and computer stations. There is a 10-KW photovoltaic system on the roof.
