Mesa County Valley School District 51 has engaged BG+co., in collaboration with DLR Group, to lead the renovation and expansion of Central High School. Originally constructed in 1959 and last updated in 2017, the existing building no longer aligns with the evolving academic, cultural, and social needs of the student population.

Through an extensive visioning process with advisory groups and community stakeholders, the design team established guiding principles focused on creating an environment that is safe, welcoming, and adaptable. Priorities include improving student movement and circulation, ensuring accessibility for all, providing flexible learning environments that support different teaching styles, and cultivating a strong sense of belonging and pride. The project also emphasizes safety and security as essential foundations for learning while designing spaces that invite engagement and reflect the school's identity.

The resulting design concept centers on a new, higher-density, centralized addition that ties the existing campus together while positioning the school for future growth. Updated classrooms will be designed with modern flexibility and technology integration to support teacher and student success across a range of learning styles. Circulation improvements will create intuitive connections throughout the building, easing movement while reinforcing collaboration and community. At the heart of the school, the addition highlights STEM career pathways, placing them prominently on display to inspire students and showcase opportunities to visitors. This approach creates not only a more equitable and functional learning environment but also a renewed source of engagement and pride for Central High School, strengthening its role as both an academic institution and a community anchor.

BG+co partnered with DLR Group for the renovation of the high school.
